Should You Use AI for Your Marketing or Hire an Agency?

Featured Image

For $20 a month, you can now ask AI to do work businesses used to pay marketers thousands of dollars to produce. So…why exactly would you still hire a marketing agency? It's a question worth sitting down to talk about. AI has changed marketing. That is not really up for debate anymore.

A remodeler or custom home builder can now use AI to draft blogs, outline emails, summarize sales calls, create ad copy, brainstorm social posts, and build a first version of a landing page in minutes.

That is useful. We use AI at Builder Funnel, too. But here is where a lot of companies get sideways: AI made marketing content easier to produce. It did not make growth easier to engineer. This distinction separates strategy from noise.

The question is not whether AI can create marketing assets. It can. The better question is how you identify what should be built, why it matters, how it fits into your sales process, and what to change to optimize for qualified opportunities.

That is where AI alone usually starts to run out of road.

How AI Can Help with Marketing for Remodelers and Home Builders

AI is a strong tool when it sits inside a clear marketing system. For remodelers and custom builders, it can help with brainstorming content topics, drafting first-pass blog outlines, summarizing calls and customer research, repurposing video or podcast content, writing first drafts of emails, organizing common questions from prospects, and speeding up repetitive marketing work.

Used well, AI can make your team faster. But faster does not mean smarter by default. If the strategy is unclear, AI can help you create more of the wrong things in less time. This faster activity doesn't automatically translate to growth.

Why AI Still Needs Human Marketing Expertise

AI can reference your documents, and use the context you give it, but the synthesis and application of the information will never quite match the nuance of your human understanding. It does not know your business like your leadership team does. It does not know which leads waste your team’s time, what your sales team is hearing every week, which past customers were the best fit, where your funnel is leaking, or how your website, ads, SEO, email, CRM, and sales process are (or aren’t) working together.

For example: imagine two remodeling companies both want “more leads.” Company A needs more projects, period. Company B is drowning in $20K bathroom inquiries when its sweet spot is $250K whole-home remodels.

An AI told “generate more remodeling leads” could technically succeed for Company B while making the business problem worse. Marketing performance is not and should not be primarily about volume. It depends on understanding what a good customer actually looks like for that specific business.

AI Marketing vs. a Marketing Agency: What’s the Difference?

We completely appreciate the allure of a product that looks polished. A low-cost AI-heavy provider can make the deliverables look similar on the surface. You're getting a lot of materials. Blogs. Emails. Ads. Reports. Social posts. Landing pages. To a business owner comparing a $500/month AI option against a full strategic growth partner, the day-to-day deliverables can look awfully similar.

The difference between marketing output and a marketing system is only evident if you examine the extent to which the blogs, emails, and ads you make create value for your business. The real growth lever is in knowing what to build, what not to build, what needs to happen first, how the work connects to revenue, how leads should be handled after they come in, what the numbers are actually telling you, and what to change next.

When Can You Use AI Instead of a Marketing Agency?

AI may be enough if you already have a clear strategy, strong positioning, a proven website, a reliable sales process, clean tracking, someone who can edit and direct the work, and someone responsible for measuring results.

If all of that is already in place, AI can help the system move faster. But if those pieces are missing, AI usually cannot create them for you.

Signs You Need a Marketing Agency, Not Just AI

You probably need more than AI if you are asking questions like:

  • Why are we getting leads, but not the right leads?
  • Why is traffic up, but revenue is not?
  • Why are competitors showing up more than we are?
  • Why are people visiting the site but not contacting us?
  • Why do we not know where our best customers came from?
  • Why does our marketing feel busy but disconnected?
  • Why does every month feel like a guess?

Those less AI output problems than they are strategy, positioning, conversion, tracking, and sales alignment problems.

AI + Marketing Expertise: A Better Growth Model

This should not be an AI vs. agency conversation. The better version is AI plus expertise.

AI can help produce. Expertise decides what should be produced, how it should be connected, and how to measure whether it worked.

At Builder Funnel, we do not look at SEO, AI search, ads, email, website, CRM, and content as scattered tactics. They are part of one system: attract, convert, nurture, close, and measure. AI helps us connect and augment these systems. It is our robotic arm, not an aimless marketing Roomba.

FAQs About AI Marketing vs. Marketing Agencies

Can AI replace a marketing agency?

AI can help create marketing assets faster, but it does not replace strategy, positioning, tracking, sales alignment, or revenue-focused decision-making.

Is AI bad for SEO?

Not automatically. Google’s guidance focuses on helpful, reliable, people-first content, regardless of how it is produced. The issue is low-quality, generic, or unhelpful content associated with first-pass, unfocused AI.

What is the biggest risk of using AI for marketing?

The biggest risk is producing more content or campaigns without a clear strategy, conversion path, or measurement system.

See Google's guide to using generative AI for more information about how this is done responsibly.

Should builders use AI in their marketing?

Yes, but AI should support the strategy, not replace it. Builders and remodelers still need clear positioning, buyer insight, conversion planning, sales follow-up, and reporting.
